12 Easy Preventable Ways to Lower Home Accidents

October 21, 2020 · In: Favorites, Motherhood

There are plenty of safety checklist that I have encountered when I was working with infants and toddlers. Therefore, I narrowed down the list below to prevent the top common causes of home injuries. We as parents or caregivers can make a difference by simply child proofing the house.

The Center for Disease Control Statistics in the US reported that every hour a child dies from injury and each year there are more than 50,000 children hospitalized due to accident-related injury. Furthermore, the study findings showed that the common causes of home accidents among children are ‘falls’, ‘struck by/against-animate/inanimate mechanical force’ and ‘poisoning’

Prevent by taking the proper safety measures to keep your family safe at home.

I remember when working as an infant and toddler teacher, I would talk to the parents about how to keep the child safe at home to prevent an injury. Now, Im here at home child proofing my home for my very eager and explorer baby.

Evelyn started crawling at 5 months, I began child proofing right away. Didn’t expect for her to start crawling this soon. Therefore, I was not prepared with child proofing products. My husband right away searched up the best sellers on baby proofing products on amazon.

Therefore, I suggest that before your child starts crawling just have the products ready. Once your child starts crawling, it’s time to child proof your house for your little one. Preventing makes a BIG difference in your child’s daily life.

Safety House Check:

  • electrical outlets should be covered

  • secure furniture to the wall
  • gate any area, example: stairs, kitchen, laundry room, or an outdoor gate for the pool
  • when cooking, keep pot handle turned inward
  • garbage should be covered in a sanitary fashion
  • matches, lighters, and torches are kept out of reach of children in a cabinet
  • small hard foods like grapes, hot dogs, olives, candies, gum, carrots, and peanuts are a chocking hazard.
  • clothes are kept away from stoves and fireplaces and should not be dried in these areas
  • iron should be unplugged and out of reach when unattended
  • children should not play with any weapons, knives, pellet gum, to sharp intruments
  • small toys, such as marbles, that can be a chocking hazard should not be around infants and toddlers
  • sharp needles or pins, safety pins should be kept out of child’s reach
  • talcum powder not to be used because it can get into infants lungs. Baby creams for diaper rash are better.
