A woman giving birth to a child has pain because her time has come; but when her baby is born she forgets the anguish because of her joy that a child is born into the world.
John 16:21
I am here again with another update on Evelyn. This time her 6 to 9 month baby update. I feel like so much has changed since her 3-6 month update.
These updates are fun to do because I like to look back to them. Let me tell you, it is so easy to forget all those little moments. Please, do not compare your baby to my baby. All pregnancies, babies, recoveries, and individuals are unique in their own ways. And that is okay, thats the beauty of the motherhood journey.
ABOUT EVELYN:
Evelyn was born on January 29, 2020. Weighting 8lb 6oz. height 21 3/4 inches at 10:41pm. Now she weighs: 17 pounds. height: 26 inches. Evelyn continues breastfeeding in-between her meals and at least twice at night. Her sleeping schedule has been all over the place since her teeth start to come in. She has the 2 bottom front teeth and one coming in on top.
She is such a little explorer, trying to figure out this world that we are currently in with COVID-19. Every time we go grocery shopping, well-baby check-ups, or to Sunday church, she is always so curious of why faces are covered. I say this because of the expression on her face, the look on her eyes, and the expression through body language. Which sort of worried me about Evelyn social development. Then thought to myself, Evelyn is spending most of her time with mom and dad, her cousins, aunts, uncles, and grandparents. And thats what matters! We all are the most important people in her life and she learns the most about communication, her social development, and love from all of us.
Evelyn’s Milestones
SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL:
Evelyn continues to enjoy looking at herself in the mirror. She actively shifts interest from one child to another playing close by. She uses her senses to explore self and others by touching their hair when its within her reach. Evelyn shows awareness of what to expect from familiar people by responding to or anticipating their actions. She looks toward the location of where an adult’s face will reappear during the game of peek- a-boo.
LANGUAGE/COMMUNICATION:
Evelyn has tremendously grown in the language and communication area. She went from making sounds and smiling to now saying “papa” which was her first word. She recognizes a few frequently used words and gestures. At 8 months, she learned to sign. She signs “more” “more eat” and “eat” during feeding time to communicate with me. Also, at 8 months, she waves when we say “hi” “goodbye” and “good morning”. Evelyn loves to play with her books, she mouths them and flips the pages on the book. She laughs and enjoys when we sing to her nursery rhymes.
COGNITIVE (LEARNING, THINKING, PROBLEM-SOLVING:
Her aunt gifted her iPlay, iLearn from Amazon, these rattles are amazing she loves to explore them by pressing, shaking, and listening to the toys and notices what happens. She demonstrates an increasing ability to observe, anticipate, and reason about the relationship between cause and effect. We have also incorporated sensory play in her activities at least once a week and she loves getting messy. Evelyn enjoys nature walks, she likes to listen to the birds chirp and the cats meow.
MOVEMENT/PHYSICAL DEVELOPMENT:
Evelyn continues to thrive in her motor skills. She moves her body and interacts with the environment, demonstrating increasing awareness of own physical effort, body awareness, spatial awareness, and directional awareness. Evelyn went from crawling and sitting to cruising at 7 months old. She is such a little explorer now. We bought her the climb and crawl activity play set and she has been loving it. She likes climbing up but once she’s up she has trouble coming back down.
SELF-HELP SKILLS:
Evelyn shows interest in participating in the process of being fed. She shows excitement when she sees her food coming towards her. I started with smooth purees, progressed to mashed/chopped and introduced finger foods around seven in a half months. Evelyn is an outstanding eater and basically eats anything I give her. She picks up crackers from her tray, holds and bites the banana, and pretty much feeds self small bite sized finger foods.
As for dressing, she responds in ways that demonstrate awareness of a dressing routine. For some reason, she doesn’t like getting dressed. She squirms to avoid having shirt being pulled over the head while being dressed. Evelyn always shows excitement during bath time, she loves splashing in the water and playing with her rubber ducky.
